Providence Journal HQ

year: 2019 | location: PROVIDENCE, RI | building: NEWSPAPER HQ | type: ACADEMIC

Nested between the old and new vernacular of Providence, the Providence Journal headquarters represents the honest voice of the city. It is an icon of both transparency and complexity, the mediator between the city’s bureaucracy and the people. The site is located at the intersection of Custom House Street and Dyer Street, where public and private sectors intersect, a point of connection. The East façade utilizes a series of 3 conditions which vary in enclosure and experience: exposed terraces, encased winter gardens, and a double facade with vertical louvers which protect the auditorium from environmental noise. The north and south facades feature recessed terraces which create gaps which correlate with the expanse of the east façade towards the river as though the building is being stretched from its back party-wall.

The defined build up and breakdown of extruded and recessed boxes creates a metabolic mosaic in which the structural and vegetative elements bring the building to life through various shading and experiential conditions. The transparency brings openness and a sense of lightness to its immediate context, contrasting the typical heavy monolithic qualities of the surrounding buildings. The piazza in front of the headquarters continues this metabolic language in the formation of crevasses, the push and pull of the landscape, and the patterned deployment of trees to define circulation and public space.
