MUSIC-CO

year: 2019 | location: NEW ORLEANS, LA | building: MUSIC SCHOOL | type: MULTI-GENERATIONAL HOUSING

From the quintessential New Orleans art form of “second lining” to the legendary influence of American trumpeter Louis Armstrong, music is historically embedded in New Orleans’ culture. This project was conceived as a School of Music for students studying in NOLA who want to live in residence with fellow musicians and mentors. The project fosters a community of musicians living and learning under one roof. Multigenerational housing offers social housing that provides a private living experience with personal balconies and a shared courtyard that are characteristic of historic New Orleans.

At street level, a public cafe creates an inviting, permeable entry, bringing together businesses, and academic and recreational programs. The central courtyard has a semi-public stage where residents and musicians use the space as a performance venue.  Most openings face the internal courtyard rather than the exterior surfaces. Each stack of villas is separated by circulation cores. The first level of villas are ADA accessible units which have direct access to parking and the interior courtyard. The courtyard provides cross ventilation and natural cooling with plants and water.
